Coventry And Warwickshire Media Community

Radio Plus

In January 2008, CWMC submitted an application to the media regulator, Ofcom, for a Community Radio Licence to run a new community radio station for Coventry. We were awarded the licence in July 2008 and now have until Christmas 2010 before we must begin broadcasting.

The original name for the station was to be Cross Rhythms Coventry but as we have developed, we felt it was important to reflect the local context in Coventry and that the name should originate from our intended target audience of 16-35 year olds. It was youth groups across Coventry who came up with the name Radio Plus, which they feel will engage them and accurately represent them and their music tastes.

Radio Plus intends to provide responsible and entertaining radio in the Coventry, Warwickshire and surrounding areas in association with voluntary organisations, local authorities, local residents, community groups and businesses in a common effort to strengthen society. It will also provide a Christian media voice in the community on behalf of all the churches in the city and help build understanding and cohesion in the wider community.

CWMC needs to raise a total of £60,000 in order to reach transmission by this Christmas (2010). We have already raised £25,000.

What we’ve already achieved: Radio Hope

CWMC supported the national Hope08 project in 2008, www.hope08.com which saw churches do more in their communities, doing it together and doing it in word and action. Hope08 was successful in Coventry with CWMC playing its part in establishing Radio Hope, a Restricted Service Licence (RSL) 10-day community radio station. Reflecting the aspirations of Hope08 across the city, Radio Hope operated from The Young Persons Centre, Broad Street in Foleshill during November 2007. 10 volunteers took part in helping to run Radio Hope and between them interviewed over 130 guests across the 10 days, from church and city leaders to a range of home-grown musical talent.

Radio Hope also paved the way for CWMC to gain the support it needed to apply for a full Community Radio Licence for Coventry. CWMC was awarded this licence in July 2008 and now has until Christmas 2010 to begin broadcasting in Coventry
